The 4th of July is just around the corner but before you make plans to shoot off fireworks, here are a few things you might need to know.

First: look out for more fireworks vendors and tents this year. Earlier this year, Iowa lawmakers passed a law that allows firework sellers to be in more parts of Iowa cities. As the QC Times reports, previously (as recently as 2017), Davenport restricted fireworks usage to the industrial areas. But under this new law, Davenport can't restrict fireworks sellers to just areas that are zoned for industrial or commercial use.

Second: you may not have as long to shoot off fireworks in Davenport. The city is considering shortening the window of time that residents can legally set off fireworks by four hours. That's in an effort to curb you buying them.

If you're also wondering: will it make any difference actually? Who knows.

But right now, Davenport allows fireworks to be set off from 2:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. on July 3 and 4. They're considering making that window 5:00 p.m.-10:00 p.m. on those two days.

Why Is It Such a Thing?

3rd Ward Alderwoman Marion Meginnis, who isn't a fan of the new law, told the QC Times that the first year fireworks were available for sale, the council received a lot of resident complaints of fireworks tents and consumer fireworks being set off.

She said in 2017 a teen bought fireworks at a tent at Division and 7th Street and blew off part of his hand.

The vote on when to make the window for legally setting off fireworks in Davenport happens this Wednesday night at the City Council meeting at 5:30 p.m.
