Field Of Dreams Progress Continues in Dyersville

According to a report from the Telegraph Herald, Dyersville City Council members received welcome news as the final contract for the major Field of Dreams utility project again came in under the engineer’s estimate.

The final leg of the project will deliver on-site improvements at Field of Dreams, and will be completed in phases. Contract E was awarded to Top Grade Excavating, of Farley, which submitted the low bid of $1,611,807. That was $813,192, or 33%, below the engineer’s estimate of $2,425,000. The project will deliver approximately 9,200 linear feet of 12-inch water main and 7,300 linear feet of sanitary sewer ranging in size from 8 to 12 inches.

Project engineer Marc Ruden was happy with the bid. There were fears it could hit the combined price cap afforded by the roughly $13.5 million in grants and private contributions it had to complete the project. However, after two portions of the project came in almost 30% over the engineer’s estimate, City Council members had planned on potentially scaling back this last phase, but after the last two sections to complete came in more than 30% under the engineer’s estimate. This allowed everything to balance out cost wise for this portion of the project.

The Dyersville city council approved up to $9.5 million in tax-increment rebates for the sports complex expansion coming to the Field of Dreams movie site. According to a report form the Telegraph Herald, council members in attendance approved the development agreement unanimously on Tuesday (7/5) with council member Jim Gibbs not present.

Go the Distance Baseball bought the iconic movie site in September last year, and unveiled its expansion master plan in April to upgrade the current and surround facilities. The $80 million expansion will add around 100 acres to the original 190-acre site. That additional land will provide space for nine new baseball fields, dormitories for youth teams, and a hotel to be completed in phases by the end of 2023. Other additions include a 100,000 square foot field house, an outdoor concert amphitheater, an RV park, jogging trails, and a large park inclusive for children and adults with disabilities. Work on the project is expected to begin this fall. That would be after the Major League Baseball game, which is planned for August 11th between the Chicago Cubs and the Cincinnati Reds.
