After being treated to our first 70*+ day of 2021 on Monday, below normal temps will settle in Wednesday and Thursday, but FEAR NOT, the mercury will look to rebound for the first week of April.

The National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center says that there’s a 60-70% chance of ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES throughout most of Iowa April 3 – 7.

So, what is the ‘normal’ high temp in April? On April 1, the average high temperature in the Waterloo-area is 54*. By the end of the month, that number will increase to around 67*. The lows, on average, range from 34*-45*.

Believe it or not, it once reached 100* in the month of April in Waterloo. On April 22, 1980, it reached triple digits. That’s the earliest date in the ENTIRE STATE to reach 100*.

On the other side of things, since 1895, it’s only reached single digits for low temps just 3 times; the coldest being -4* on April 6, 1982.

Since 1895, it’s only reached 90* or higher in just 12 instances in April in Waterloo.

The THREE MONTH outlook (April, May, June) also looks to feature above normal temperatures. The Climate Prediction Center says that there is a 40% chance of above normal temperatures not just in Iowa, but across the entire United States. The only areas where below normal temperatures could show up is in Northwestern Washington and the Southern coast of Alaska.
