44 Riders Killed in Illinois—State Sounds Alarm
Most of the friends I know that have motorcycles already know that their life depends on riding safe. In the state of Illinois, there's a new reason for alarm, though, due to a disturbing spike in motorcycle accident fatalities according to the state police.
As of the date of this writing, we are 27 weeks into 2025. I bring up that number because according to a press release from the Public Information Office of the Illinois State Police say they have already encountered 44 motorcycle fatalities in 2025. Here are some other numbers they shared that should get your attention:
- While motorcycles are only 3% of the registered vehicles in Illinois, 12% of all traffic fatalities involve them
- 59% of all motorcycle fatalities involve impaired driving
- 40% of serious motorcycle accidents have speeding as a factor
What can be done to reduce motorcycle fatalities in Illinois?
The Illinois State Police advise all motorcycle riders wear a helmet, eye protection and what they call "sturdy" jackets, pants, boots and gloves. The warnings aren't just for motorcycle riders. They warn other vehicle drivers to always see motorcycles which means checking blind spots often and making sure to keep a safe distance from motorcycles when traveling near them.
Even one fatality is one too many, but 44 already in 2025 is disturbing. Let's hope we've seen the worst of the Illinois accident season already and not just the beginning.
