According to an article from KWQC, lawmakers in Illinois want to do away with "offensive" mascots once and for all. A law is being proposed that would impact public schools in the state of Illinois, making them change their "offensive" mascot images, names, and nicknames. In the article, they say...

"A new Illinois bill was introduced this month that would prohibit the use of Native American names, mascots and logs in all public K-12 schools...If the bill were to become law, it would go into effect on Sep. 1, 2027."

This bill specifically targets names like the Braves, Warriors, Illini, Raiders, or anything related to Native American culture. To read more about this proposed new law in the Land of Lincoln, click here!

Is this the right thing to do?

To me, names like Warriors, Braves, Raiders, and others aren't offensive but the symbolism behind them and the logos/mascots that are associated with them could be deemed offensive. IF your school is the Warriors, and you have a Native American cartoon Esq character as your mascot, couldn't you change the mascot and logo and still be the Warriors? I mean the most successful basketball team over the last decade in the NBA is the Golden State WARRIORS...Eliminating the bad visuals is fine, but why are terms like Warriors not ok? What are your thoughts on this?
