How Caitlin Clark and Michael Jordan Deal with Politics [WATCH]
Michael Jordan was the most popular athlete in the world during his playing days in the NBA. No other athlete had a bigger platform to address issues that he felt were important. But during those years, Jordan didn't use that platform for political purposes. When asked why he didn't endorse Democratic candidates, Michael famously answered, "Because Republicans buy shoes too." Perhaps no other athlete now has eyes on them like Caitlin Clark. The former Hawkeye and current Indiana Fever star is taking a similar approach as Jordan when it comes to politics.
A certain pop star made her political opinion clear earlier this week with a post on Instagram. The Des Moines Register pointed out that Caitlin Clark 'liked' the post. What did it mean? Was that Clark's endorsement too? Clark was asked about it during pregame media availability on Wednesday before the Fever played Las Vegas. I think she nailed it.
The Register added that Clark urged everyone to do their own research into important issues and then use their constitutional right to vote. She did not say that she would be endorsing any candidate for president.
Clark understands that no matter what answer she would have given, some of her fans would have been upset by her choice. And personally, I don't turn to Caitlin Clark for a recommendation on who I should vote for. I tune in because I like watching her play basketball! I watch sports to escape from things like political discourse. It is a big reason many fans are so upset when sports and politics get blurred.
I don't care who Caitlin Clark votes for, just like she isn't overly concerned with who I vote for. That is the beauty of our democracy. We all have a voice and a vote. Use it.
