Bridge Connecting Iowa and Wisconsin Will Close in October
Construction of the new Lansing bridge between Iowa and Wisconsin was continuing into the summer without any issues. But that has changed, and the old bridge will soon be shut down and demolished.
Work on the New Bridge Affected the Old Bridge
CBS2 reports that work on the new Lansing bridge was moving along smoothly this summer, with new pillars already built on the Wisconsin side of the Mississippi River. But as crews began drilling deeper for the new pillars, they noticed their work shook the old bridge. Crews attempted to fix the issue, reinforcing the old bridge's foundation so that it could remain open during construction of the new one, according to CBS2.
The Old Lansing Bridge Will Soon Close
Efforts to strengthen the old bridge did not work, and CBS2 reports that the bridge will close to traffic on October 15th. The marked detour will take drivers around an hour and a half. However, the DOT will offer a ferry service to cross the river, which will cut that time in half. Nearly 700 cars are expected each day.
When Will the Old Bridge be Demolished?
CBS2 reports that demolition of the old bridge will continue through the winter months, and the implosion of the old bridge is expected near the end of the year. The new Lansing bridge is scheduled to open in 2027.
