One NFL Team Has Already Won 3 Titles in a Row, and Done It Twice
Before we get started, let me address the angry Chief fans in the room. Yes, if you win Super Bowl 59 you'll be the first team to win three straight Super Bowls. But you won't be the first team to win three straight NFL championships. That feat has been done before by one team. And they did it twice!
First, a history lesson. Before the 1970 merger of the American Football League and the National Football League, the two leagues met in four games that would later be known as The Super Bowl. Super Bowl III in 1969 was the first to be known as the Super Bowl. Super Bowl I and Super Bowl II were named retroactively. But before the Super Bowl era, champions were determined by two different systems. In 1920 the APFA, American Professional Football Association, was founded. It changed its name to the NFL, National Football League, in 1922. The league split into two divisions in 1932 and played annually in the NFL Championship Game.
The Green Bay Packers had the first dynasty of the early NFL, winning three straight NFL titles from 1929 to 1931. They would go on to three-peat again just as the Super Bowl Era was about to begin.
The Packers, led by Hall of Fame coach Vince Lombardi, would win the NFL Championship game against Cleveland to conclude the 1966 season. Then in 1967, Green Bay would go on to beat Kansas City in Super Bowl I, and then beat the Oakland Raiders in Super Bowl II.
The Green Bay Packers are the only NFL franchise to ever three-peat, and they've done it twice! If you're wondering how many teams came close to winning three straight Super Bowls, the list is long.
- Green Bay Packers: Super Bowl I, Super Bowl II
- Miami Dolphins: Super Bowl VII, Super Bowl VIII
- Pittsburgh Steelers: Super Bowl IX, Super Bowl X, Super Bowl XIIi, Super Bowl XIV
- San Francisco 49ers: Super Bowl XXIII, Super Bowl XXIV
- Dallas Cowboys: Super Bowl XXVII, Super Bowl XXVIII
- Denver Broncos: Super Bowl XXXII, Super Bowl XXXIII
- New England Patriots: Super Bowl XXXVIII, Super Bowl XXXIX,
If Kansas City can complete the three-peat, it will be an impressive feat. Especially in this age of free agents and salary cap restrictions. And while they would be the first team with three SUPER BOWL wins in a row, the record for most three-peats and most NFL Titles still resides in Title Town...Green Bay, Wisconsin!
