Hawkeye Head Coach’s Son Decides to Transfer Away From Iowa

After five years of playing for his father in Iowa City, Iowa men's basketball player Patrick McCaffery has decided to play one final season someplace else.

Hawk Central reports that McCaffery has entered the transfer portal and will play his sixth season of college basketball for a team other than Iowa. His last game as a Hawkeye was a good one. McCaffery scored 19 points off the bench to lead Iowa in a second-round NIT loss to Utah. McCaffery was a 1,000-point scorer while at Iowa and started 61 games for the Hawkeyes.

Patrick McCaffery's Iowa journey has been a tough one, both on and off the basketball court. Hawk Central points out that it began before he even got to Iowa. He was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 2014 before starring for Iowa City West High School. He was a four-star recruit who committed to Iowa but had to redshirt his freshman year due to the effects of his cancer medications.

Then last season McCaffery stepped away from the game while dealing with anxiety. He would return to the team. This season, he struggled early with injuries but returned to be Iowa's top bench player in the second half of the season.

McCaffery is the third Hawkeye to enter the transfer portal this offseason, joining Dasante Bowen and Tony Perkins, according to Hawk Central. I hope Patrick lands someplace where he can enjoy one final season of college basketball without the added pressure of being the coach's son. He certainly has earned it.
