Here’s The Illinois Flag Design Residents Overwhelmingly Voted For

Will the Land of Lincoln get a new flag?

Starting last fall, there was a contest through the Secretary of State's office to allow Illinois residents to create what they thought the state flag should look like. Here were the requirements:

• includes "natural features of the state, history and culture of the state"
• 3 or fewer colors is recommended
• Your name, address, details, and your connection to Illinois
• People under 18 can send in designs if it's in coordination with a parent/adult mentor
• Designs can't use AI, copyrighted material, or be stolen from other designs

There were 10 finalists that were voted on through February and nearly 385,000 votes were cast.

Now the Illinois Secretary of State has posted on Instagram revealing who the possible winner is, though it won't be finalized until April 1st, according to NBC Chicago.

Illinoisans Picked Their Own Flag

Yep, that's right. According to Secretary Giannoulias, 43% of Illinois residents that voted chose to keep the state's already existing flag.

To make the results of the vote official, the commission will have to prepare and deliver a report to the General Assembly no later than April 1st. Then lawmakers will vote on if they should adopt a new flag or if they should keep the current one.

The possible good news is that any official documentation you have with the flag on it might not change.
