Gotta love the little four-legged friends.

We've told you that, compared to the rest of the nation, Iowa is one of the cheapest places to be a dog owner.

Apparently, we're really good at owning pets in general. Statista has found that Iowa is one of the top states for cat ownership in 2024, specifically the 6th best state in the country.

The study found that about 35% of households in Iowa have cats. They're the second most popular pet to own, next to dogs.

As for the price tag, Pettable found that the average cost of owning a cat in Iowa is about $1,575/year. They got that statistic with looking at the costs of kitty litter, food, pet insurance, vet visits, and vaccines. But that also depends on the health of the cat and how much you have to take them to the vet, what kind of food they like, and their age. I definitely spent more on my cat when he was a kitten.

A big argument with people not getting cats or pets in general is that price tag. Like with dogs, it's often significantly cheaper to adopt a cat that already has vaccines and has been spayed or neutered. If you want a specific breed of kitten, you're going to pay quite a bit more (like anywhere from $500-10,000). For perspective, I adopted my then-kittens from a shelter for $20.

Vermont residents own the most cats, with nearly half of their households owning a pet cat in 2024.
