Illinois Is Home To One Of The Worst Cities To Drive In
This should come as no surprise to anyone that Illinois has one of the worst cities in the U.S. to drive in. Why should that not be a surprise? I'll give you proof in a second but just think about every time you have driven in Illinois. It's not fun.
When you look at where the worst places to drive are, it's primarily big cities. There's a ton of traffic, accidents, road-raging drivers, and more. Illinois' biggest city is one of the worst cities to drive in and if you've driven there, you know why.
Illinois Has Really Bad Drivers
Illinois doesn't have the worst drivers in the U.S., but they definitely aren't good. This isn't an opinion either. Back in August, Forbes confirmed not only that Iowa has better drivers, but Illinois has the 15th worst drivers in the U.S.
Forbes looked at six key metrics like states with the highest number of drunk drivers, the number of fatal car accidents involving a distracted driver per 100,000 licensed drivers, the number of drivers who looked at a phone per mile, and others.
The Best Cities In The U.S. To Drive In
To figure out which cities are really nice to drive in and which ones are just terrible, WalletHub compared a sample of the 100 most populated U.S. cities across four key dimensions which include the cost of ownership and maintenance, traffic and infrastructure, safety, and access to vehicles and maintenance.
These are the five best cities to drive in:
1. Corpus Christi, TX
2. Raleigh, NC
3. Boise, ID
4. Plano, TX
5. Scottsdale, AZ
Illinois Has One Of The Worst Cities To Drive In
Looking at the other end of WalletHub's list, we find a city in Illinois. Mind you, no city in Iowa made this list and this is the only city in Illinois to make an appearance.
Coming in as the 7th worst city in the U.S. to drive in is, Chicago.
Not only did Chicago crack the top 10 worst cities to drive in, but it also did really badly in many other categories, too.
Chicago has the highest annual hours spent in congestion per auto commuter, the third-lowest auto-repair shops per capita, the second-highest auto maintenance costs, and the fifth-highest parking rates.
If you don't need to drive in Chicago, don't. But hey, at least Chicago isn't as bad as the top three worst cities drive in, which are Detroit, MI (3rd-worst), San Francisco, CA (2nd-worst), and Oakland, CA (worst).
