Memphis, If You Smell Cucumbers In Your Garage, Leave Right Now
It's getting to be that time of year when it'll start to get cooler out at night, and that means that everything from spiders to humans is going to be looking for a place to stay. Here's an important warning to consider this season.
Unless you're a person who enjoys making salads in parts of your home that aren't the kitchen, the smell of cucumbers in places you shouldn't smell them could be a bad thing.
With the ups and downs of temperatures coming with this upcoming fall season, some animals need somewhere to hide out. Mice will try and get into the walls of your home. Bats and birds will work their way into your attic to hide out, but some critters will try to hide out in your garage.
There is one specific animal to keep an eye out for - and your nose can be a huge tool in knowing this dangerous animal is in your garage.
It turns out Venomous Snakes can be found in Tennessee, and sometimes in your garage... they can also smell like cucumbers.
The state of Tennessee has a total of 32 native snake species, four of which are venomous according to the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency. East Tennessee has 23 of those snake species that are frequently found in the area, two of which are venomous.
These are the 4 venomous snakes of Tennessee:
- The Copperhead
- The Timber Rattlesnake
- The Cottonmouth
- The Pygmy Rattlesnake
Why Venomous Snakes Smell Like Cucumbers
Some sources say that these highly venomous snakes like rattlesnakes or copperheads will smell like a cucumber, and there's a reason why.
When feeling threatened, snakes will emit a musky smell from their scent glands as an early warning to predators that lets them know they feel threatened. It's typically found with Copperheads, but all venomous snakes will emit some kind of odor.
If you do smell and spot a snake, remember that they can and will poison you, and they strike fast, so good luck trying to jump out of the way of a strike. Call a professional to remove the snake from your home.
Other Places To Keep An Eye Out
If you like to hike or work in your yard, remember the cucumber scent trick to know you've come across a venomous snake. Make sure your dogs stay back from the smell of cucumbers as well, because they may not know better than to be curious where the smell is coming from.
It's possible you accidentally stumbled across a nest of these animals, which will smell like cucumbers. A good rule of thumb to follow is if you smell cucumbers somewhere you shouldn't be there.
