Mystery Of How An Ape Got Pregnant While Living Alone Is Solved
A Zoo in Japan was surprised after one of their apes gave birth, even though she never had interactions with males.

Could this ape be the next virgin Mary? How could this pregnancy happen? The zoo keepers took the time to investigate, and eventually, they solved the mystery.
The animal that grew suspicious was a gibbon. (Gibbons are apes in the family Hylobatidae.)
Here is the mother, Momo, and her new unnamed baby.
Zookeepers at Kujukushima Zoo and Botanical Garden Mori Kirara in Sasebo City, Nagasaki Prefecture, said they were surprised when a lar gibbon named Momo gave birth in February 2021, as the ape had been living in her own enclosure without any males present.
Collecting DNA Evidence
After the birth of the baby gibbon, it took two years to collect enough stool and excrement samples from the mother and baby to perform DNA tests, as mama was extremely protective of her male offspring.
Who Is The Father?
The father of the male baby was found to be Itou, a 34-year-old agile gibbon.
How Did They Mate?
Zookeepers said the two apes were never on display together, so how was it possible for this ape to be the father?
It seems that a glory hole is to blame...
Zookeepers discovered that the partition between Momo's exhibit and the backyard where Itou has kept had holes about 9 millimeters (.35 inches) in diameter. (Big enough for an ape wiener I guess)
It was clear that the two apes managed to mate through the hole in the board.
The board has now been replaced with a hole-less one and the zoo plans to attempt to introduce Itou and Momo officially so they and their child can live as a family.
