When you think of Green Bay Packers gameday, images of bratwursts sizzling on the grill, cheeseheads in full force, and plenty of beer around the tailgate probably come to mind. But according to a new league-wide survey, Packers fans actually drink less than most other NFL fan bases once it comes time for kickoff.

Packers Fans Rank Among NFL’s Lightest Gametime Drinkers

Action Network surveyed more than 3,000 fans in August 2025, asking about three categories: pregaming, in-stadium drinking, and “heavy drinking” (defined as five or more drinks on gameday).

Across the league, 49% of fans admitted to pregaming before entering the stadium, and some fan bases – like the Arizona Cardinals, Buffalo Bills, and Houston Texans – landed at the top of the heavy-drinking rankings. Cardinals fans in particular stood out, with nearly 19% qualifying as heavy drinkers.

On the opposite end of the spectrum? Packers fans.

Green Bay: Bottom of the List

Only 3.2% of Packers fans surveyed qualified as heavy drinkers, the lowest percentage in the NFL. Just 36% reported that they even pregame at all – again, the lowest number across all 32 teams. For comparison, Los Angeles Chargers fans topped that list with 69% saying they pregame, and 14% admitting to downing five or more before kickoff.

Inside the stadium, Packers fans were also on the lighter side. About 56% said they drink at Lambeau Field, with only 5% crossing the five-drink threshold. Texans fans, by contrast, led the way with 80% drinking inside their stadium and nearly 1 in 5 reporting heavy in-game drinking.

Beer Prices Help Explain the Trend

Of course, none of this means Packers fans don’t love their beer – it might just mean they prefer to enjoy it at the tailgate or at home. NFL beer prices are steep across the league, averaging around $10.75 for a 16-ounce domestic pour in 2025. In some markets, that price climbs as high as $16.49, while Cincinnati fans see some of the cheapest at about $6.80.

Put simply: for many fans, loading the cooler before heading into the game makes more financial sense. But Packers fans still show more moderation than most, keeping Wisconsin’s reputation for beer enthusiasm largely outside Lambeau’s gates.

Lightweights or Just Focused on Football?

Packers Nation might finish last in this survey, but many would argue that’s just fine. After all, the Lambeau experience is as much about the game, the history, and the atmosphere as it is about what’s in the cup holder.

Compared to the wild reputations of Bills Mafia or Houston tailgates, Packers fans keep things relatively balanced on gameday. And with kickoff temperatures often in the single digits later in the season, maybe moderation is simply survival.
