When the smoke cleared, Indian River County deputies made an unexpected discovery, a man wanted for outstanding warrants. The fire blazed in Vero Beach, claiming a house and setting the stage for the dramatic arrest.

When authorities attempted to take Wyatt Guy, 34, away from the fire, they mentioned he acted in a contrary manner.

Instead of fleeing, Guy ran into the burning house. Deputy Ernesto Macias relayed to WPBF 25 News that Guy told him he had done this so he could free his two dogs into the backyard, before barricading himself within the property.
Deputy Ernesto Macias expressed his confusion to WPBF 25 News and announced that an investigation was underway to discover why Guy had set fire to his own home in the first place.

How Did The Fire Start?

When the Code Enforcement was called on David Guy's house due to the mess in his yard, Guy took it upon himself to clean up and started a small fire to burn some of the stuff. However, the fire grew out of control and spread to his boat and then his house.

Deputy Ernesto Macias told WPBF 25 News,

"He said he had gotten code enforcement called on his house because of the mess. He was trying to clean up the yard, at which time he started a little fire to burn some of those stuff. And the stuff then bounced from the fire pit to a boat, and then ... transferred to the house, and the house just got fully engulfed."

Officials said when Guy ran to his home, he locked himself inside for about 10 minutes.

"The only option he had was either stay in the home and possibly burn or come out. I figure he’d have to come out at some point in time, and he did," Macias said.

Why Did He Run From Police?

Investigators soon realized he was wanted for violating his probations on several felony charges, including burglary.

"I had recognized him from previous encounters. So, I knew he had warrants, and I knew we had other deputies looking out for him. And I just happened to recognize him when he ran back to the house as the gentleman with active warrants," Macias said.

Guy attempted to flee from the police who had come to arrest him but was ultimately apprehended.

"He was uncooperative, he was making excuses, he gave the other deputy a different name when they responded there. I think he said his name was Dylan, which is not his name. And then he said he just couldn’t breathe, that’s why he tried to run away from the home, which was not the case."

The sheriff's office won't be bringing charges against him related to fleeing or providing a false identity, and he is still detained without bail at the Indian River County jail.
