Rock Island Driver Rescued After Car Crashes Into Rock River
A driver was pulled to safety Wednesday night after their vehicle left the road and went into the Rock River near the U.S. 92 bridge.
Emergency Crews Respond Quickly
The Rock Island Fire Department reported that a car went off the roadway near the Centennial Expressway before entering the water. Firefighters, wearing water rescue suits, were able to reach the vehicle and bring one person to safety. “We are pleased to report that the individual sustained no injuries,” the department said in a statement.
Joint Effort Between Departments
Both the Rock Island Fire Department and the Blackhawk Fire Protection District were dispatched to the scene. According to officials, the exact location of the accident was unclear at first, so both departments responded simultaneously. Crews worked together to ensure a safe rescue. “Great work by all crews for their fast response and training that ensured a safe outcome,” firefighters shared.

Traffic Backed Up During Rescue
The crash and rescue caused significant traffic delays along IL-92. Around 8:50 p.m., vehicles came to a standstill as police and fire units blocked off sections of the roadway. By 9 p.m., recovery crews began pulling the submerged vehicle from the river, according to a TV6 team on site.
The cause of the crash has not yet been released. Officials confirmed that no further injuries were reported, and the incident remains under review.
