One of Iowa’s Best Offensive Players Enters the Transfer Portal
On Tuesday of this week, Iowa quarterback Alex Padilla entered the transfer portal. Just two days later, one of Iowa's best playmakers isn't far behind.
Keagan Johnson, wide receiver from Bellevue, Nebraska, announced via Twitter on Thursday, December 1 that he will also be entering the portal.
Though Johnson's tenure at Iowa didn't last long, his true freshman season showed plenty of promise. Over 13 games and nine starts, the wideout hauled in 18 passes for 352 yards and two touchdowns with a long reception of 42 yards.
Due to a lingering hamstring injury, Johnson barely saw the field this season, playing against Nevada and Nebraska. In the contest versus Nevada, he caught two passes for 11 yards.
Iowa wide receivers coach Kelton Copeland said this of Johnson's injury earlier this year:
His process is his process. We don’t know what’s going on inside of his body or what is actually happening. I do know this though, this young man wants to play football more than anybody else wants him to. He’s doing everything he can to get back on the field, and quite frankly, I don’t want to be negative, but you called me on a good day because I’m being as honest as I can, but quite honestly, you can’t hold that against a young man, and I feel like there are certain people out there that are trying to hold that against this young man and hold him to the fire because they haven’t seen him this season.
The position coach continued:
I know for a fact that this young man is doing everything he can to get back on the field. Hopefully, he will get back on the field this season, and if not, so be it. It’s the way God chose it to be and we’ll look forward to what happens in bowl prep and God willing, we make it to a bowl game, we’ll see what happens there. Right now, I know he’s working his butt off and he was out there on the field today trying to get better and improve. He’s on the right track. Other than that, I’m obviously not a doctor or athletic trainer, so that’s a question better suited for someone else in that.
Prior to choosing Iowa, Johnson was a four-star recruit and received scholarship offers from Nebraska, Iowa State, Kansas State, Northern Illinois, North Dakota State, and others according to 247Sports.
