If You’ve Bought Chicken In The Last Decade, You May Be Entitled to Financial Compensation
I always watch for class-action lawsuits that I can put my name on the list for, because even if it's $15, that's three beers bought for me for doing little to no work. Well, there's a new one that just about everyone in the country qualifies for.
NBC News Chicago reported that prosecutors in the Broiler Chicken Antitrust Litigation alleged that multiple big-name companies conspired together to control the price and supply of chicken, violating consumer antitrust laws that have been in place for over a century.
If you purchased chicken between January 1st, 2009 and December 31st, 2020 from the following companies, you could be eligible to receive some cash money from this lawsuit.
- Pilgrim's Pride
- Tyson Foods
- Mar-Jac Poultry
- George's
- Fieldale Farms Corporations
- Peco Foods
Whether you purchased fresh or frozen raw chicken in the form of whole, cut-up birds within a package or white meat parts can file a claim.
Meat that was marketed as halal, kosher, organic or free-range are not part of this suit.
To qualify, you must have purchased the chicken in one of the following states:
- California
- District of Columbia
- Florida
- Hawaii
- Illinois
- Iowa
- Kansas
- Maine
- Massachusetts
- Michigan
- Minnesota
- Missouri
- Nebraska
- Nevada
- New Hampshire
- New Mexico
- New York
- North Carolina
- Oregon
- Rhode Island
- South Carolina
- South Dakota
- Tennessee
- Utah
- Wisconsin
"Over $180 million in settlements have been reached with the defendants in this litigation," Brent W. Johnson, co-lead counsel with Cohen Milstein Sellers & Toll, PLLC told TODAY Food. "This represents significant recovery for consumers who were harmed by the defendants conspiring to raise the price of chicken in grocery stores and other retailers."
