Iowa Hawkeye Women Set to Rule the Big Ten in 2022-23
After an exciting 2021-22, the Iowa Hawkeye women's basketball team is the team to beat this season.
KCRG reports that Lisa Bluder's squad has been selected #1 in 2 preseason polls: the Big Ten coaches poll as well as the media poll.
Superstars Monika Czinano and Caitlin Clark both return, thankfully, and were each selected for preseason All-Big Ten honors in both polls, as well. They were unanimous choices by the coaches.
Clark led the country in points per game last season with 27, assists with 8, final points (863), free throws made (200), triple-doubles (5), and 30-point games (11). Czinano led the nation in field-goal percentage (.679).
Caitlin Clark, a junior guard, was also named the media's and Big Ten coaches' selection as preseason Big Ten Player of the Year.
This is all fantastic stuff, but the preseason accolades come with the pressure of building on, if not exceeding what the team did last year.
Last year's campaign saw them capture the Big Ten tournament championship, a share of the Big Ten regular-season title, but the Hawkeyes were ousted in the second round of the NCAA tournament by upstart Creighton. Here is how the rest of the preseason Big Ten Top 5 shakes out:
- Iowa
- Indiana
- Ohio State
- Maryland
- Nebraska
