The University of Iowa is the oldest institution for higher education in the state and was established in 1847.

The University has been a member of the Big 10 Conference since 1899 and currently has an enrollment of a little more than 30,000 students, according to the University of Iowa.

There are currently 22 varsity sports teams that represent Iowa's most historic school and throughout history, these sports teams have seen changes to the Hawkeye logo that is worn on their team's uniform.

Hawkeye Logo Changes

All 22 of the sports teams at the University of Iowa have used these logos to varying degree. The current logo, which we'll see later, is used by every team with slight changes to the color scheme. All of the logos used in this article are from 1000 Logos.

We start with the initial logo of the Hawkeyes, which was used by the University beginning in 1953

Here we have a funny image of a Hawk, wearing a football helmet, running with a Hawkeyes flag. Something you might notice is the color scheme. In 1953 through 1962, the Hawkeye's had a navy blue and yellow logo, as opposed to the black and gold we see on the logo today.

The school saw a logo change in the early 60s. The Iowa Hawkeye bird now wore a football helmet and jersey with a bold letter I front and center. This cartoon style 'Hawkeye' was used for 9 years. This logo is still loved by many Iowa Hawkeye fans to this day.

I apologize for the blurry photo. This was one of the few photos I could find that I got permission to use.

In 1971, the Iowa Hawkeyes saw another new design introduced to the school's logo. The cartoonish logos were out and a more 'modern' approach was used. While the design is fairly simple, there is a more traditional and elegant approach to the Iowa Hawkeye.

In 1979 this iconic Iowa Hawkeye logo was born and it still remains to this day. This logo is used with a variety of color schemes by different Iowa teams but is synonymous with the state of Iowa. Whether a team embraces a black and white look, gold and white, gold and black, or gold-black-and-white, the shape of the bird head remains the same.

Will the University of Iowa ever change the logo or are you a fan of the logo that remains today. It's one of the most iconic logos in college sports, and when people see the Hawkeye logo around the country, they know exactly which school it represents.

Do you think the University of Iowa should change, alter, revert back, or keep the current school logo? Which one is your all time favorite? Let us know in the comments?
