The Brands brothers dominated B1G wrestlers in the 1990s and then in international competition.  Currently, Tom Brands is the head wrestling coach of the Iowa Hawkeyes and his twin brother, Terry, is the associate head coach.

Brands is a 1996 Olympic gold medalist and member of wrestling’s Hall of Fame, Brands is only the eighth head wrestling coach at the University of Iowa. The former Hawkeye wrestler was a four-time All-American and three-time national champion (1989-92) at Iowa.

Brands was named head coach of the Hawkeyes in 2006 after previously coaching the Virginia Tech wrestling program to national rankings and recognition.  He has a 236-23-1 (.909) overall and 113-10 (.917) Big Ten coaching record at Iowa. He has a 253-43-1 (.852) career mark and a 114-12 (.905) record at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Brands was named Big Ten Coach of the Year in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2020 and 2021. He is the only coach in program history to earn the award five times.

Terry Brands is a two-time World Champion and 2000 Olympic bronze medalist.

Brands was promoted to associate head coach in 2011 after serving two stints (2008-10 and 1992-2000) as an assistant coach at Iowa.  As a University of Iowa wrestler, he was a two-time NCAA champion, three-time All-American and three-time Big Ten champion for the Hawkeyes (1989-92) at 126 pounds. He ended his career at Iowa with a 137-7 record.
