Chicago’s Famous SkyDeck Ledge Cracked Under Visitors’ Feet
If you're afraid of heights, the SkyDeck in Chicago has probably been a hard pass for you since it opened. So this story won't do anything to assuage your fears.
Early this week, the ledge's floor cracked. And it wasn't just a minor split; this looked a cellphone screen after it lands face-first on cement. Don't worry, no one was hurt, and the floor stayed intact!
What actually cracked was the protective layer of glass — kind of like a screen protector on a phone. The floor itself is designed to hold up to five tons of weight, according to the Dispatch Argus.
This layer has cracked before, back in 2014. It's unclear what caused the splintering in both cases, but regardless, the Sears Tower — it'll always be the Sears Tower to me, never the Willis, sorry — wants visitors to know that they are totally safe on the attraction.
