Flooding This Year May Have Actually DECREASED Mosquitoes In The QCA
Have you noticed that you're getting fewer mosquito bites this year? I think I've only had two, maybe three at this point, which is definitely low for me. As it turns out, it might be because of the insane flooding we had earlier this year.
I know, it sounds odd right? Flooding results in a lot of standing water, and standing water typically means a lot of mosquitoes hanging around. (They like to lay their eggs in it). But, according to one Ph.D candidate at Western, it's possible that the high river levels, combined with quick-moving waters actually washed away more eggs.
For now, this is just speculation. It'll take some time to compare the data from previous years with this year, and then add future years as well. But if it is true, I'm not complaining. It might be the single upside to having heavy flooding in the Quad Cities.
