Underproductive Illinois Macy’s Closing Doors With More To Come
In February 2024, Macy's announced it would close underperforming stores over the next three years. Now, we know which locations, including in Illinois, will close in 2025.
Macy's sales declined by 2.4% in the third quarter of 2024, but the company still believes in the brand's future, saying in the press release, "People have endless options when it comes to where and how they shop. Macy’s customers expect seamless shopping experiences and continuous improvements both in-store and online to meet those expectations."
More Retail Stores Closing In Illinois
Macy's is not alone in closing stores in 2025. Kohl's announced they would be closing 27 stores by April of this year.

Macy's Closing 66 Stores Nationwide
“Closing any store is never easy, but as part of our Bold New Chapter strategy, we are closing underproductive Macy’s stores to allow us to focus our resources and prioritize investments in our go-forward stores, where customers are already responding positively to better product offerings and elevated service,” said Tony Spring, chairman and chief executive officer of Macy’s, Inc in a press release.
This plan includes closing approximately 150 underproductive stores over three years while investing in its 350 go-forward Macy’s locations through fiscal 2026.
In the initial round of 66 stores that are closing, Illinois will be losing its location in Springfield, Illinois at White Oaks Mall.
With another 84 stores to be named and closed between now and January 30, 2027, more Illinois stores will likely be on the list.

You can also see a theme when you look at the full list of announced closures. 25 of the stores are part of a Mall.
