Winter Weather Advisory Issued For Iowa and Illinois This Weekend
Updated with new timing graphics and location of impact.
Brace yourself. Winter weather is coming for Iowa and Illinois. And some parts of Iowa should get ready for a really rough weekend while the farther east you go the better things should be.
If you think your 4-wheel drive truck with a plow will be just fine, this kind of storm can get anybody in trouble.
Winter Weather Advisory In Effect
Snow is one thing, but Eastern Iowa and Western Illinois need to be ready for ice.
The National Weather Service has a Winter Weather Advisory that is effective from midnight on Friday to noon on Saturday.
People can expect freezing rain with a total ice accumulation of one-tenth to two-tenths of an inch. For those new to the Midwest, that doesn't sound like much but all it takes is a thin layer of ice to get your slipping on the road or your feet slipping on the sidewalk.
East-southeast winds will gust to around 20 to 30 mph during the freezing rain, which will put extra stress on tree branches. Additionally, expect temperatures to quickly warm from south to north late Saturday morning into the afternoon, which will help ice to melt faster once the freezing rain ends.
Areas Impacted By The Winter Weather Advisory
This Winter Weather Advisory will cover the entire Quad Cities area. People to the east may not see as much freezing rain, but to the west places like Iowa City and Cedar Rapids are already under an Ice Storm Warning.
So if you had plans to travel to the west this weekend you may want to change those plans.
